The Versatility of Impressions Provoked by Blue By Ali Russo It’s no secret that the color blue is a favorite amongst many people. Some can’t say why they like the color the most, while others explain their bias is based upon a personal memory, or inclination. Either way, blue is a particular color that tends to have the notion to provoke certain thoughts, feelings and emotions in people and Artists’ Corner & Gallery in Acton, Mass., based their second thematic show just on that. The space had the same atmosphere as a long, lived-in home, with love seats to lounge on if and when necessary. Jurored by artscope’s publisher and founder, Kaveh Mojtabai, the paintings are arranged neatly along the walls, each work having its own, respective area. So, maybe that’s why the theme of blue felt so familiar in the cozy space, and why it drew the enthusiastic crowd that it did. The … [Read more...] about Blue at Artists’ Corner & Gallery

Reading With The Senses at Lesley University
How Artists Break Conventional Binds By Ali Russo “Works like those you will see here take many different forms, but have one common feature: they reveal themselves slowly, and therefore require close reading.” That’s how Ruth R. Rogers, guest curator for the “Reading With The Senses” exhibition at Lesley University’s Nancy & Edward Roberts Gallery, opened her speech last Friday at its opening reception. She went on to mention that in her career as a curator for a rare book library, people often ask her, “What’s your oldest book?” In response, Rogers combs through a variety of objects, such as portable wax tablets from Ancient Greece, to a modern-day iPad. “My point is that the book takes many forms, and has been evolving for thousands of years, just as language has.” The show’s 54 pieces are split into three distinct sections: Space. Time. Movement, Music. Language. … [Read more...] about Reading With The Senses at Lesley University
Gallery Spotlight: Little Beach Gallery
By Rhiannon Leigh Hyannis, MA. - Visiting Cape Cod and need the perfect souvenir to give as a gift? Looking for a beautiful piece of artwork to hang in your home and remind you of the crash of the waves? Need the perfect piece of jewelry? Hoping to support local artists? If you stop by the Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis, Mass., you’ll find an eclectic selection of artwork and items that’ll allow you to feel the warmth of Cape Cod — long after you’ve returned home. During my recent visit, artist and owner Jen Villa welcomed me into her space where she displays artworks of local Cape Cod artists, pieces from several Cape Cod companies and her own photographs. Though there are several higher-priced pieces … [Read more...] about Gallery Spotlight: Little Beach Gallery
Wanderlust: New York City
Race, Background, and Culture at the MoMA By Ali Russo My father and I only had three days to spend in New York City until the throes of work and schooling pulled us back, so, we needed to coordinate carefully. The train we took out of the Route 128 Station in Westwood, Mass., left at 5:45 in the morning; meaning, if we timed it right, we’d be pulling into Penn Station at 10:45 a.m. the latest. If we wanted a full day at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), we had to leave it a full day undisturbed by travel. So, it was decided: Sunday was our Museum Day. This wasn’t our first time visiting MoMA. In the past, we had visited museums such as The Metropolitan, the Museum of Fine Art and even the Museum of Natural History, but the MoMA has always been my favorite. Not only is the staff incredibly kind and helpful, the people are so, so excited to have a job that involves them talking … [Read more...] about Wanderlust: New York City

A Feast For The Senses
Gallery Seven Whets Our Appetites by Brian Goslow Several times a year, artscope publisher Kaveh Mojtabai is asked to judge and/or curate exhibitions. For “FEAST: Images of the Edible,” on view through April 2 at Gallery Seven, he was charged to review an “eclectic” group of digital submissions on the theme of food. “I tried to pick work that would sell in a commercial gallery,” Mojtabai said, and select “work I could imagine being framed and going on someone’s wall.” Most of the work chosen was based in realism, along with a few abstract works. “There are some that push those boundaries but could easily hang on a person’s wall if they related to it personally,” he said. The end result is a warm mix of New England-themed work that would make the perfect housewarming gift or wedding present, or complement recent renovations to your kitchen or dining area — and I mean … [Read more...] about A Feast For The Senses
